COURSE OVERVIEW
In this CPD activity, you will develop an understanding of what is the pathophysiology of different types of osteoporosis, and how to investigate the effects of vitamin D on muscle strength and prevention of osteoporosis; by end of this activity, you will become familiar with the pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment of osteoporosis in order to enhance patient care.
Goal Statement
The aim of this session is to investigate the effects of vitamin D supplementation (with/without calcium) on muscle strength, prevention of osteoporosis, bone mineral density (BMD) and falls/fractures
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon the completion of this activity, the participant should be able to;
- Describe the primary and secondary causes of osteoporosis.
- Outline the various risk factors for osteoporosis.
- Appraise the importance of bone mineral density as it relates to fracture risk and the diagnosis of osteoporosis
- Assess the importance of Vitamin D levels in the management of osteoporosis
- Describe the non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic osteoporosis treatments discussing the candidates for therapy, choice of drug, and choice of initial therapy.
- Summarize the advantages of alfacalcidol over plain vitamin D in the treatment of osteoporosis.
- Describe the role of active vitamin D analogues in osteoporosis treatment and prevention
- Describe the contraindications/intolerance to oral bisphosphonates.
- Proper management of Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.
- Discuss how to monitor the response to therapy
- Discuss the use of estrogen or estrogen plus progestogen or raloxifene in the management of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
